Modigliani, Who Didn't Draw the Eyes He Couldn't See
Amadeo Modigliani, who made a name for himself in his short life, filled with tragedies and the tuberculosis he encountered at the age of ten, was born in Livorno, Italy. Starting his art education at the age of 14 under the guidance of the painter Guglielmo Micheli (1866-1926) in Florence, where he went with his mother, Modigliani moved to Paris in 1906 and started making a living by creating copy paintings. Flat, oval faces, and women with long necks were the outward expressions of Modigliani’s subconscious searches. In many of his portraits, the eyes were not drawn, and the painter would say, "When I see their souls, I will draw their eyes too."
